Group seeking to extend California tax increases raises $12M

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — An initiative campaign seeking to extend a temporary tax increase on the wealthy says it raised about $12 million in the most recent quarter.

A campaign statement released Wednesday shows the group of teachers, doctors and labor organizations has nearly $14 million on hand for a November initiative to extend Gov. Jerry Brown’s Proposition 30 tax increases.

It’s one of two initiatives seeking to extend existing voter-approved beyond their scheduled expiration collecting signatures to extend the tax-increase measure.

The $12 million includes $8.5 million already reported in March from the political arm of the California Association of Hospitals and Health Systems.

The tax increases would raise billions of dollars, much of which would be earmarked for education and health care.

While the Democratic governor championed Proposition 30, he hasn’t said whether he supports extending the income tax increases on the wealthy or the half-cent temporary sales tax.
