Mountain View’s city council voted unanimously Tuesday to move forward with plans to charge its largest employer, Google, millions of dollars through a tax based on its number of employees.
The proposed tax, which would require voter approval, would update the city’s business license fee and charge Google about $3.3 million annually for its more than 23,000 workers in Mountain View. The tax would affect many of the city’s businesses. Small businesses would pay a flat fee, while companies with more than 50 staffers would get charged per employee at a rate that increases with size.
