In July, total trade through the state’s ports rose $7.7 billion (9.3%) compared to July 2025, and by $4.9 billion (5.6%) compared to the prior month. Imports continue to surge due to a confluence of several factors, including early holiday shipments especially by smaller and medium-sized firms in an effort to bypass tariffs and fuel-driven transport costs, shippers bypassing the Suez Canal due to conflict in the Middle East, and draft limits issued for the Panama Canal in anticipation of El Niño-related droughts. Year-to-date trade levels remain well ahead of prior years in nominal terms.

And in real terms as well.

In nominal terms, origin exports showed little change, off $0.3 billion (-1.8%) compared to the prior month and up only $0.2 billion (1.1%) compared to the same month last year. Both, however, showed declines in real terms.
The growth in the trade price indices slowed somewhat, with import prices down 4.7% in July on an annualized basis but still up 5.9% over the year. Stripping out the more volatile energy component, import prices were up 4.5% both for the annualized rate for the month and over the prior 12 months.
