All Businesses Could Get State Tax Perks

Businesses across California could have access to state tax credits similar to those previously limited to economically challenged areas, under a plan by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The governor unveiled the proposal in May as part of his 2014 budget revise.

If approved by the Legislature, it would also allow the state to begin offering tax breaks to companies to get them to move or expand in California. The state wouldn’t go to the extreme of writing checks to businesses — like Texas does — but by the beginning of next year it would have tools to sweeten its incentives.

Kish Rajan, director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, Go-Biz, said he’s often approached by businesses that are being courted by other states. They ask him what California can offer.
