California Jobless Claims Rise

The number of people filing new jobless claims across the country increased by 10,000 to 281,000, according to a weekly report from the U.S. Department of Labor. California saw a moderate increase in new claims.

The four-week moving average was 274,750, or an increase of 1,000 from the previous week.

The number of people claiming unemployment was 2.15 million, or an increase of 46,150 from the previous week. In comparison, there were 2.47 million people claiming jobless benefits at this same time last year.

California reported an increase in new claims of 2,185. The state did not offer a reason for the change.
