The number of people filing new jobless claims across the country increased by 15,000 to 297,000, according to a weekly report from theĀ U.S. Department of Labor. California saw an increase in new claims.
The four-week moving average was 279,500, or an increase of 4,500 from the previous week.
The number of people claiming unemployment was 2.15 million, an increase of 758 from the previous week. In comparison, there were 2.47 million people claiming jobless benefits at this same time last year.
California reported an increase in new claims of 2,930. The state attributed the change to layoffs in the service industry.
