Democrats Press Prevailing Wage

SACRAMENTO — The Assembly Local Government Committee Wednesday approved legislation that would effectively force charter cities to require higher prevailing wages for all public works project contracts regardless of where the money comes from.

If the cities balk, they would be barred from receiving any state funds for future projects, under Senate Bill 7.

In San Diego County the charter cities that would have to comply if the bill becomes law include San Diego, Vista, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Oceanside, San Marcos and Santee.

The city of San Diego is moving independently to enact the prevailing wage requirement for all projects with a final vote set for later next month.
