Editorial/Opinion: Job Creation Should Be Legislature’s Top Priority

Job creation remains Job 1 in Southern California, and especially here in San Bernardino County, requiring more help than ever from our state leaders in Sacramento.

Maintaining the status quo is not an option if we’re going to kick-start what remains a disappointingly slow economic recovery. In our county, employment is not expected to return to pre-recession levels until sometime between 2016 and 2018 – two years later than economists had been projecting. Our 11.2 percent unemployment rate remains a full percentage point above the regional average, more than 2 percent above the state average and nearly 4 percent above the U.S. average.

Market forces alone cannot fix that. With a new year upon us, we need our newly elected super majority in Sacramento to place the highest emphasis possible on job recovery.
