Transit-Centric Growth Essential in Climate Plan

To meet the city of San Diego’s goals for fighting climate change, a lot of people will have to get out of their cars and start walking, biking or taking public transportation to work.

With the city’s Climate Action Plan up for final approval Tuesday, communities will likely feel new pressure to accept the type of urban density routinely balked at by homeowners who fear traffic, noise and loss of parking spaces.

“The pressure is going to be on the city to deliver the numbers in the Climate Action Plan. That means providing the infrastructure to encourage residents, commuters and shoppers to use anything but their cars to get around,” said Joe LaCava, chair of the Community Planners Committee, which oversees the city’s network of planning groups.
