If President Trump follows through on his plan to impose an escalating tariff on all imports from Mexico, the impact to California’s economy would be huge.
California exports more goods to Mexico than from any other state, accounting for 17% of all the state’s exports, according to the California Chamber of Commerce. And the value of those exports — the biggest component of which is computer equipment, including electronics — has risen more than 20 percent over four years, from $25.5 billion in 2014 to $30.7 billion in 2018.
Imports are even higher. Last year, Mexico sent $44 billion worth of goods to California, according to Cal Chamber, with transportation equipment, computer gear and agricultural goods leading the way. Only Texas and Michigan import more from Mexico.
Mexico accounted for $530 million in imports and $27.9 million in exports last year at the Port of Oakland. It’s only about 1 percent of all the port’s trade, however, since most is with countries in Asia.
