Winter is Coming–Expect to Pay Less at the Gas Pump as Refineries Switch to Cheaper Blend

Winter-blend gasoline, the historically less-costly sibling of the summer blend, officially arrives Nov. 1 – and drivers in the Inland Empire and Orange County can look forward to paying a little less at the gas pump.

“The transition from summer to winter gas is always good news for consumers because refiners are able to process more gas for every barrel of crude,” said Gordon D. Schremp, a senior fuels specialist with the California Energy Commission.

Refiners can add butane to gas – too volatile for summer fuel – and produce 5 percent to 8 percent more gas for every barrel of crude oil, he said in a telephone interview.

But winter or summer, supply and price volatility are always in the mix for fuel in California.
