The state’s tax system leans significantly on these few taxpayers. For instance, the amount of income tax Ohtani could save annually by changing his residence in 2033 is equivalent to the total tax liability of the bottom 1.78 million tax filers in 2021 (positive AGI). To use another illustration, finding just 317 more individuals like Ohtani (with no deferrals and MLB approval for the 12 required expansion teams) or doubling the taxes paid by the bottom 3.34 million tax filers could erase the state’s projected deficit for 2024-25.

Overall trade levels showed some mixed results in the October data. Both origin exports and destination imports (including both goods produced/used in the state as well those identified with other states but supporting California supply chain jobs such as in wholesaling and freight forwarders) were down compared to October 2022.

Overall trade levels were off compared to September 2022, although California’s total share of trade through US ports saw a pause in its decline (on a 12-month moving basis) for the first time since March 2021.

The average gasoline price rose 51 cents a gallon in California while dipping 4 cents in the rest of the US. In the most recent data from CSAA, the California average on October 5 was up another 19 cents, while the overall US average dropped 7 cents.

The August trade results show a weakening in trade activity, reflecting both the challenges to trade in the state along with overall softening in the global trade numbers.
