The June trade numbers for California continued to show lower activity. Total trade through the state’s ports was down 12.1% from June 2022 in nominal terms, while origin exports were off 4.8% and destination imports dropped 18.6%.
The additional costs under California policies, regulations, taxes, and fee add-ons continue to keep California energy prices at the highest or near the highest among the contiguous states and DC across all energy sources.

In the near and medium prospects, California’s current jobs rate has not been sufficient to bring workers back to employment recovery conditions much less economic progress beyond that point as the state’s higher operating costs in particular weigh on the middle class wage jobs.
