On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled to its lowest level since October, falling 358.04, or 2.1%, to 16990.69, while the S&P 500 shed 43.88, or 2.1%, to 2035.73.
Sustaining the heaviest losses were the few pockets of the market that have pulled ahead in 2015, a year in which the Dow industrials and S&P are both down.
