S.F. becomes first city in nation to mandate employers provide fully paid parental leave

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has unanimously passed a new law requiring all businesses in the city with more than 20 employees to offer six weeks of fully paid parental leave to their workers.

San Francisco businesses with 20 or more employees will shoulder the cost of offering 45 percent of a worker’s salary while he or she is on parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child. The state of California currently pays for 55 percent of a worker’s salary while he or she goes on parental leave.

The law applies to both parents and to both births and adoptions, and makes San Francisco the first city in the U.S. to mandate fully paid parental leave. It will take effect in 2017, eventually phasing in to cover all businesses with 20 or more workers.
